Latest Proposals
The significant changes in the new plans for the King Alfred are a direct result of extensive consultation on the proposals both with local and with national and government bodies. This feedback has enabled the scheme to be enhanced to better meet community needs and aspirations.
Key changes and enhancements of the new proposals include:
Design
- Significant redesign and re-massing of the scheme to address issues of bulk and height
- Reduction in the height of the buildings along Kingsway by two storeys
- The profile of the towers has been refined and enhanced and increased in height by three storeys
- The perimeter buildings now feature a curved profile and roof to complement the sports centre design
- The colour of the perimeter buildings has been changed to a subtle white tone from the previous multi-coloured palette
- All the affordable homes will now benefit from a balcony
Public Realm
- Integration with a new city wide strategy for the public realm in Brighton and Hove
- Improved access and integration with adjacent areas and central Hove
- Introduction of new design concepts for the public realm including performance/ event areas
- Extensive greening with native, wildlife friendly plants
Sustainability
- Renewable Energy
- Solar energy panels on the roofs of the towers and a number of mid-rise buildings
- Wind turbines incorporated on the roofs of the towers
- Ecology
- Extensive, native, wildlife-friendly planting throughout the new public spaces
- Vegetated shingle roofs that will enhance the micro-climate and bio-diversity of the local ecosystem
- 'Green walls' that will provide insulation and enhance the micro-climate and bio-diversity of the local ecosystem
